Porsche's all-electric sports sedan, the Taycan, boasts the specs and technology to captivate even the most dedicated petrolheads. Porsche invested six billion euros and hired 1,200 new employees specifically for the Taycan's launch, highlighting the company's significant commitment to electric mobility. This monumental shift aims to propel Porsche into an electric future with a car that not only meets but exceeds expectations for performance and innovation. The Taycan is a battery-powered, zero-emission sports sedan that maintains Porsche’s legacy of driving excellence. It’s incredibly fast, with the Turbo S variant achieving 0 to 60 mph in just 2.6 seconds and generating 750 horsepower, making it one of the best Porsches ever made.
The Taycan arrives in two initial versions: the base model Turbo and the high-performance Turbo S. Both models feature impressive specifications that appeal to car enthusiasts. The Taycan incorporates groundbreaking technology, such as an industry-first 800-volt battery system, which uses smaller cabling than the standard 400-volt system, reducing weight and enabling ultra-fast charging. The 93.4-kWh battery can charge to 80 percent in just 22.5 minutes using high-speed chargers Porsche is installing at its dealerships nationwide.
Performance enthusiasts will appreciate the Taycan's handling and responsiveness. Chassis engineer Ingo Albers highlights the new all-wheel-drive system, which eliminates a central system in favor of individual control for each of the dual motors. This setup enhances performance by significantly reducing response time, making traction control up to ten times faster than in a traditional Porsche. Albers notes that the Taycan is more nimble and agile than Porsche’s other sports sedan, the Panamera, thanks to its balanced weight distribution.
The Taycan's powertrain includes an innovative, industry-first two-speed gearbox, attached only to the rear motor. This gearbox provides both rapid low-end acceleration and a high top speed of 161 mph, while maintaining efficiency for highway cruising. This combination of advanced technology and performance makes the Taycan a highly sophisticated vehicle.
Available in various performance levels, the Taycan represents Porsche's commitment to electrification and may inspire future models and derivatives. In its debut year of sales in 2020, over 20,000 Taycans were delivered, constituting 7.4% of Porsche's total volume.
The name "Taycan" pays homage to the steed depicted on the coat of arms of Stuttgart, which appears on the Porsche crest. In Turkish, "tay" translates to colt or young horse, while "can" conveys liveliness. Notably, the "Turbo" designation in higher trims is used for branding purposes, as these electric vehicles do not utilise turbochargers.
