IMS Eternal Fix retro fit kit installs in-car without removal or disassembly of the engine required. The Cylindrical Bearing with Thrust Control design has a load capacity 5 times greater than the inferior, failure prone, Ball Bearing solutions on the market!

Why Cylindrical is Best?
Cylindrical Bearings have very high load bearing capacity, 5 times more than Ball Bearing. Cylindrical Bearings are used in, High Temp & Low Viscosity Lubrication such as Automatic Transmissions. They can carry extreme lateral pressure without wear to the friction surfaces. This is because the bearing friction surface is flat not concave.

IMS Intermediate Shaft Bearing Upgrade – EPS Eternal Fix (M96 / Early M97.01) Prevent future IMS-related engine damage with the EPS Eternal Fix for the well-known Porsche IMS bearing issue. Unlike common ball-bearing upgrades, EPS uses a patented cylindrical roller bearing with thrust control, engineered to separate axial (thrust) loads from radial (running) loads for long-term durability.

What makes EPS different?

Many bearing upgrades can be compromised when thrust loads act on the bearing rollers. EPS’s patented design ensures the rollers carry radial load only, while the axial load is carried around the full perimeter of the outer race. This reduces overload conditions and delivers a solution engineered to last the life of the engine.

Key benefits

Patented cylindrical bearing with thrust control (not a ball-bearing solution)

In-car installation: designed to be pressed into the rear of the engine without engine disassembly EPS states significantly increased load capacity vs typical ball-bearing upgrades (often quoted as up to 12x)

Backed by an EPS 5-year warranty

Recommended to install alongside the Rear Main (#8) Seal and Housing

Important fitment note (997 3.8L M97.01) Engine numbers up to M97/01 68509790 use the older IMS bearing (fits). Engine number M97/01 68509791 onwards has the larger revised IMS (does not fit). Please verify engine number before ordering.

About IMS Bearings

Porsche IMS Bearing Upgrades - Intermediate Shaft Reliability Solutions

The IMS (Intermediate Shaft) Bearing is a critical internal component used in many water-cooled Porsche engines to support and time the intermediate shaft that drives the camshafts. In certain Porsche engines, the original factory IMS bearing design has proven vulnerable to premature failure, which can result in catastrophic engine damage.

Available from Design911, this category features upgraded Porsche IMS bearing solutions engineered to improve lubrication, durability, and long-term engine reliability. These upgrades are essential for preventative maintenance, engine rebuilds, and performance-focused ownership.

What Does the IMS Bearing Do?

The IMS bearing supports the intermediate shaft, ensuring accurate camshaft timing and smooth engine operation.

Core Functions:

  • Supports and stabilises the intermediate shaft.
  • Maintains precise camshaft timing.
  • Transfers rotational forces within the timing system.
  • Ensures smooth engine operation at all RPM ranges.
  • Plays a vital role in overall engine reliability.

A healthy IMS bearing is fundamental to safe Porsche engine operation.

Why Do IMS Bearings Fail?

Certain factory IMS bearings were designed as sealed units with limited lubrication, making them susceptible to wear and failure over time. Common causes include:

  • Insufficient lubrication of sealed bearings.
  • Bearing seal degradation allowing contamination.
  • Extended service intervals and infrequent oil changes.
  • High mileage and age-related wear.
  • Increased load from spirited or track driving.

When an IMS bearing fails, debris can circulate through the engine, often leading to complete engine failure.

Why Upgrade the IMS Bearing?

Upgraded IMS bearing solutions are engineered to address the weaknesses of the original design.

Upgrade Benefits:

  • Improved lubrication through open or oil-fed designs.
  • Stronger bearing construction and materials.
  • Significantly reduced risk of catastrophic engine failure.
  • Ideal for preventative maintenance during clutch or engine work.
  • Long-term peace of mind for Porsche owners.

Upgrading the IMS bearing is one of the most important reliability improvements available for affected Porsche models.

Highlights

  • Upgraded Porsche IMS bearing solutions
  • Designed to improve lubrication and durability
  • Essential reliability upgrade for susceptible engines
  • Ideal for preventative maintenance and rebuilds
  • Reduces risk of catastrophic engine failure
