In the 997.2 generation, the Carrera S saw a jump to 385hp from its 3.8-liter flat-six. The standard manual gearbox remained, but the introduction of the dual-clutch PDK as an option marked a significant advancement. Despite minimal changes to the chassis, enhancements to springs, dampers, and the introduction of an electronically controlled sports suspension based on the active PASM suspension contributed to improved driving dynamics.
The 2009 Carrera S received an additional 30horsepower, reaching a top speed of 187 mph. The direct-injection engines were entirely new, with no carryover components from previous iterations. Notable changes included bore and stroke configurations aimed at enhancing engine characteristics and separating the performance of the 3.6 and 3.8-liter engines. Direct injection resulted in improved midrange power delivery and a more refined driving experience.
The PASM set-up underwent fine-tuning to enhance ride quality in 'Normal' mode and performance in 'Sports' mode. Porsche's six-year development of the PDK gearbox yielded impressive results, with faster, smoother, and more precise shifts compared to traditional automatic transmissions. Equipped with the PDK transmission, the Carrera S achieved a remarkable 0-60 mph time of just 4.3 seconds.
Options such as the X51 upgrade, boosting power to 381hp, and the latest Porsche Communication Management system (PCM 3.0) with a touchscreen display became available. Exterior changes included redesigned front air intakes, LED daytime running lights, and updated taillights, while interior upgrades featured a new infotainment unit with a touchscreen display and optional navigation system. Additional seating options and instrument cluster improvements rounded out the updates for the 2009 model year.
