The 991.1 Carrera S, revealed in 2011, continued Porsche's tradition of increasing both size and power. With the 991.1 Carrera S Coupe, the 911 evolved further into a luxurious super-car while retaining its iconic profile. Constructed with nearly 50% aluminum, the body became lighter and 20% stiffer, despite growing in length and wheelbase. Its engine, a 3.8ltr flat-six, was paired with a pioneering seven-speed manual transmission or an optional PDK automatic. Enhancements included a wider front track, larger tyres, and dynamic chassis control options for superior handling.
Visually, 991.1 Porsche 911 retained its classic round headlights and distinctive air scoops, with an active rear wing for stability at high speeds. Inside, luxury prevailed with modern features like a TFT display alongside the tachometer. The car's performance was impressive, reaching 60 mph in just 3.9 seconds, thanks to its low weight, powerful engine, and quick-shifting PDK transmission. Braking was equally exceptional with standard six-piston front and four-piston rear brakes.
However, the adoption of electric power steering and an idle-stop system marked controversial changes. While steering feel was altered, the new system provided precise response, enhancing control in challenging situations. The idle-stop system aimed for greater fuel efficiency by shutting down the engine at stops. Overall, the 991.1 Carrera S embodied Porsche's commitment to innovation and performance in the ever-evolving realm of luxury sports cars.
