In 1993, Porsche Motorsports at Weissach unveiled a turbocharged variant of the 968 called the 968 Turbo S, marking a departure from Porsche's usual naming conventions. While the "S" designation typically signifies increased power over its standard counterpart, as seen in models like the 911 turbo, the 968 turbo S offered a unique blend of performance enhancements. Visually, it resembled the Club Sport, featuring distinctive NACA hood scoops, an adjustable rear wing, three-piece speedline wheels, and a deeper front spoiler. The suspension was lowered by 17.8 mm (0.7 in), and the car was 20 kg (45 lb) lighter than the standard 968.
Under the hood, the 968 turbo S boasted a 3.0ltr engine with an 8-valve SOHC cylinder head sourced from the 944 turbo S, paired with a 944S2-style engine block. Tests conducted in 1993 revealed impressive performance figures, including a 0 to 97 km/h (60 mph) time of 4.7 seconds and a top speed of 282 km/h (175 mph). The engine produced 309PS (227kW; 305hp) at 5,600 rpm, with a maximum torque of 500 Nm (369 lb⋅ft) at 3,000 rpm. However, the 968 Turbo S was an exclusive model, with only 14 units produced in total, and it was available for sale exclusively in mainland Europe.
