In 1989, Porsche unveiled the 944 S2, representing a pinnacle of performance with its naturally aspirated, dual-overhead-cam 16-valve 3.0ltr engine producing 211PS (155kW; 208hp). This engine, boasting a bore of 104 mm (4.1 in) and a stroke of 88 mm (3.5 in), stood as the largest production four-cylinder engine of its era. The 944 S2 also underwent transmission and gearing revisions tailored to the robust 3.0 L M44/41 powerplant.
Sporting the distinctive rounded nose and rear valance akin to the turbo model, the 944 S2 showcased an impressive array of performance figures. It could achieve a blistering 0–97 km/h acceleration time of 6.0 seconds (0–100 km/h in 6.8 seconds) and boasted a top speed of 240 km/h (149 mph) for models equipped with a manual transmission. Additionally, a Club Sport touring package (M637) was made available to enthusiasts seeking enhanced driving dynamics.
Optional features included dual airbags (for left-hand drive models), a limited-slip differential, and ABS, further augmenting the safety and performance capabilities of the 944 S2. As standard equipment, the model came equipped with Design 90 16-inch cast alloy wheels, underscoring its sporty demeanor and iconic Porsche styling.
The debut of the initial Porsche 944 Cabriolet prototype occurred at the 1985 Frankfurt Auto show, showcasing a design crafted by Anotele Lapine and executed by Bauer. Despite its favorable reception, it wasn't until 1987 that the American Sunroof Corporation (ASC) secured the contract to manufacture the new model. However, it took an additional two years for ASC to finalize their new production facility in Weinsberg, Germany, before production could commence. Finally, in January 1989, the eagerly anticipated Porsche 944 S2 Cabriolet began its journey off ASC's assembly line.
