There are potentially two gears that can go bad. First is the gear on the side of the speedometer. If your gear is metal then you will not need this gear. If it is plastic inspect closely where the shaft comes through the gear as there will generally be a hairline crack and the gear must fit tight.

Porsche Instruments & Gauge Clusters | Precision Monitoring for Performance and Reliability
Your Porsche’s instrument cluster is the heartbeat of the driving experience — delivering vital performance and engine data at a glance. From speedometers and tachometers to oil pressure and temperature gauges, these instruments combine precision engineering with timeless Porsche design. Over time, however, electrical faults, fading displays, or worn mechanisms can affect accuracy and reliability.
At Design911, we supply high-quality instrument clusters, gauges, and individual components designed to match or exceed original performance standards. Each part is meticulously engineered to ensure accurate readings, seamless integration, and long-term durability, restoring the driver-focused feel that defines every Porsche.
Whether you’re restoring a classic 911 cockpit or replacing a modern digital cluster, our range provides precision, authenticity, and performance you can trust.
What Do Porsche Instruments Do?
Instrument clusters and gauges allow drivers to monitor essential performance metrics, helping maintain control and awareness in all driving conditions.
Core Functions:
- Display vehicle speed, RPM, fuel level, oil pressure, and temperature.
- Provide real-time engine and system monitoring.
- Integrate warning lights and indicators for safety and diagnostics.
- Maintain Porsche’s signature driver-focused layout.
- Enhance cabin aesthetics with precision-crafted design and finishes.
A properly functioning instrument cluster ensures both performance accuracy and a refined interior presentation.
Why Do Instruments Wear or Fail?
Even high-precision instruments are subject to wear, ageing, and electrical issues — especially in classic and high-mileage Porsche models.
Common Causes of Failure Include:
- Faulty sensors or electrical connections causing inaccurate readings.
- Dimming or failed backlighting and displays.
- Internal gear or stepper motor wear in analogue gauges.
- Faded dial faces or cracked lenses from UV exposure.
- Moisture ingress causing corrosion or display malfunction.
When these issues occur, inaccurate readings or unresponsive
gauges can compromise both safety and driving confidence.
