In 1984, Volkswagen's decision to halt the production of engine blocks for the 2.0ltr 924 posed a challenge for Porsche. With the 924 being notably more affordable than its 944 counterpart, discontinuing it left Porsche without an accessible entry-level option.
To address this, Porsche equipped the narrower-bodied 924 with a slightly detuned version of the 944's 163 bhp 2.5-liter straight four engine, enhanced the suspension, and incorporated five-lug wheels and 944-style brakes, while maintaining the 924's original interior.
The outcome was the 1986 release of the 148 bhp 924S. Additionally, Porsche reintroduced the 924 to the American market
