Ignition Coil

The Gen 6 Premium Perma-Tune CDI module makes diagnostics easier by providing onboard diagnostics that are automatically displayed by two coloured LED function lights.
These LED lights assist in diagnosing both the ignition module and the car. The green LED is a status indicator that can flash diagnostic fault codes. The red LED is a strobe light that flashes each time the coils fires in the same manner as a timing light which is especially useful for detecting engine misfire.
The LED function lights are mounted in the harness electrical connector and can only be seen with a mirror while the module is powered up.
As an additional feature of the Perma-Tune Premium module, there are three self-resetting overload protectors that protect your Perma-Tune and your car from overload damage. The overload protectors are hidden underneath the ignition module so they do not spoil the original look of the part.

Distributor with Harness
Distributors wear out and rob your engine of the horsepower it was intended to produce. Worse yet, they can leave you stranded or even damage the crankshaft ring gear. Forget about rebuilding an outdated distributor with hard to find parts when you can replace it with modern technology that looks original. Replacing that worn out distributor has never been easier with the Perma-Tune Bespoke distributor, for the 2.0 L and 2.2 L engine. There are no wires to cut and splice: the distributor has the electrical harness built in and features the original equipment compatible connectors for a plug and play installation.
Simply mount the ignition module to the relay panel where the later model cars had the module mounted and then plug the distributor harness connector into the Perma-Tune module. The power, ground, tachometer and coil connections are made at the existing coil wires. The harness has loop connections that allow joining the wires without having to cut and splice the car harness wires. The Perma-Tune distributor harness is made using the same vinyl sleeve loom construction as the original wiring for that factory original look.
The Perma-Tune Bespoke Porsche distributor is an exact fit replacement part that will drop right into the engine. Setting the static timing is easy with the built in trigger point LED that lets you know when the rotor is pointing in the right direction. Idle timing is set in exactly the same way as the factory manual indicates and the factory mechanical and vacuum curves are preprogrammed into the distributor. The mechanical vacuum can is replaced with a reliable MAP sensor that is fully programmable to perform advance or retard vacuum functions. It just doesn't get any easier than this.

Ignition Coil
The Perma-Tune Black Ignition Coil is specifically designed to operate with all Perma-Tune modules to maximize the performance and service life of your Perma-Tune ignition module. It has the period correct look for the Porsche 911SC with a brown top and black body and will fit the original mounting bracket and wiring harness of the car.
The Black ignition coil is very rugged and can resist the heat and vibration that it will encounter on a vintage car engine. Triple seals insure that the dielectric oil inside the coil will not leak out. The high Voltage tower is extra thick to resist arcing and will still fit the original spark plug wire boot. The internal components of the coil are designed to resist deterioration to provide a long life.

Latest revision Bosch short coilpacks with electrical connector and pin kit. Coil-On-Plug (COP) ignition coils.
6x coilpacks for your 911 coil on plug conversion

These coils are a replacement for the standard ignition system when converting the CIS or early motronic cars to aftermarket EFI with new ECU and wiring looms. They remove the distributor, coil and leads as these are no longer needed.

Fits:
Porsche 911 G-model 1975 - 1989

The OEM coils are made by Bosch. These are proven and tested performance coils. These fit snugly in the factory plug holes. If used for a lower coil for twin plug, a holder tab is recommended from the lower rocker cover bolt to ensure the coil stays, as well as a heat shield to protect it from radiant exhaust heat.

These coils require spark plugs with a smaller ceramic to fit correctly. Plugs such as IW22 iridiums work well.

About Ignition Coil

Ignition Coils – Reliable Spark and Power Delivery for Porsche Engines

Ignition coils are essential components in your Porsche’s ignition system, transforming low-voltage power from the battery into the high-voltage energy required to ignite the air-fuel mixture inside the engine cylinders. A healthy ignition coil ensures smooth acceleration, efficient combustion, and consistent engine performance.

At Design911, we supply a wide range of genuine and high-quality ignition coils for various Porsche models including 356, 911, 924, 944 and 928. Each coil is precision-engineered for durability, heat resistance, and optimal spark performance, ensuring your Porsche continues to deliver the power, efficiency, and reliability it was designed for.

What Do Ignition Coils Do?

Ignition coils play a crucial role in your Porsche’s ignition system by converting 12-volt battery power into up to 40,000 volts to fire the spark plugs. Their main functions include:

  • Generating high-voltage spark energy for combustion.
  • Delivering consistent ignition timing across all cylinders.
  • Supporting smooth acceleration and engine efficiency.
  • Reducing emissions by ensuring complete combustion.

Modern Porsche models may feature coil-on-plug systems that provide precise, individual spark control for each cylinder — maximising performance and responsiveness.

Why Do Ignition Coils Fail?

Over time, ignition coils are subjected to high voltage, heat, and vibration, which can cause wear or internal damage. Common causes of failure include:

  • Heat degradation of coil insulation or wiring.
  • Moisture intrusion leading to short circuits.
  • Age-related electrical fatigue in coil windings.
  • Faulty spark plugs causing excessive resistance and strain.
  • Corrosion or poor electrical connections.

Typical symptoms include engine misfires, rough idling, loss of power, difficulty starting, or an illuminated check engine light.

Why Replace Faulty Ignition Coils?

A failing ignition coil can cause poor fuel economy, misfires, or damage to the catalytic converter. Replacing worn or damaged coils restores proper spark strength, combustion efficiency, and overall engine performance.

Benefits of replacement include:

  • Smoother acceleration and stronger performance.
  • Reduced misfires and improved fuel economy.
  • Lower emissions and smoother idle.
  • Long-lasting, manufacturer-quality reliability.

All ignition coils in our range are made using high-grade materials and advanced insulation technology, ensuring consistent voltage delivery, heat resistance, and dependable performance under demanding conditions.

1. What does an ignition coil do in a Porsche?
The ignition coil converts the car’s 12-volt battery power into a high-voltage spark that ignites the fuel-air mixture in each cylinder. This ensures smooth engine operation, efficient combustion, and reliable performance.

2. What are the symptoms of a bad ignition coil?
Common signs of a failing ignition coil include engine misfires, rough idling, reduced acceleration, poor fuel economy, and a check engine light. You may also notice hesitation or vibration when accelerating.

3. Can I drive my Porsche with a bad ignition coil?
Driving with a failing ignition coil is not recommended. It can cause engine misfires, loss of power, and long-term damage to spark plugs or the catalytic converter. Replacement should be done promptly to avoid costly repairs.

4. How long do ignition coils last on a Porsche?
Typically, ignition coils last between 60,000 and 100,000 miles, depending on driving conditions and maintenance. Regular spark plug replacement and avoiding moisture exposure can extend their lifespan.

5. Are manufacturer-quality ignition coils as good as genuine Porsche parts?
Yes — manufacturer-quality ignition coils are built to the same precise specifications and performance standards as genuine parts. They provide excellent fitment, voltage output, and long-term reliability, often at a more cost-effective price.
