Ignition coil 14v. Porsche 911 84-89 / 924S / 944 / 964 / 968 / 928 (Bosch ref: 0221118322)
The OE Match (Bosch style) ignition coil (Bosch MPN 0221118322, Porsche OEM 944.602.115.00 / 944.602.115.01) sold as the direct replacement coil, It’s the high-voltage transformer that converts 12–14 V battery energy into the high voltage a spark plug needs to ignite the air/fuel mix. Please note the Bosch product is no longer available so this is one of the only alternatives.

Replace the coil when any of the following apply:

  • Out-of-spec resistance on primary or secondary (measured with DVM). If primary > ~1 Ω or secondary well outside the 5–9 kΩ region.
  • Intermittent misfire(s), rough idle, loss of power, or poor fuel economy that follow coil diagnostics. Ignition coils degrade and can produce weak/inconsistent sparks before total failure.
  • Check Engine Light with misfire codes (P0300–P030x) that point to a particular cylinder and a coil swap test proves the coil is at fault.
  • Visible damage (cracked housing, carbon tracking/arcing, oil contamination of electrical terminals, corroded connectors). These are signs of imminent failure or arcing that can damage plugs/caps.
  • Age / preventive maintenance: rubber seals, insulation and internal windings deteriorate with heat and time; on older cars it’s common to replace coils as part of ignition refresh.

Common failure modes / symptoms

  • Cylinder misfires / rough running (single cylinder or random).
  • Hard starts or no-start if coil output falls below what’s needed to light the plug.
  • Check Engine Light with misfire codes (P0300, P0301… etc).
  • Intermittent stalling or power loss under load (coil heating causes intermittent fault).
  • Arcing / carbon tracking visible on coil body or cap — can cause cross-firing or misfires.
  • Failed connectors / harness corrosion causing poor coil drive — sometimes harness/connectors are the root cause rather than the coil itself.

Ignition coil Part Number: 901 602 502 00 (often written as 901-602-502-00 or 90160250200). Converts the battery’s 12 V into the high voltage necessary to ignite spark plugs via a Bosch Capacitive Discharge Ignition (CDI) system.

Fits:
Porsche 911 1969-83 / 911 SC
Porsche 930 Turbo 3.0L 1975-77
Porsche 930 Turbo 3.3L 1986-89

Common issues & symptoms of ignition coil failure

  • Engine misfires and rough running, caused by inconsistent or weak spark delivery
  • Difficulty starting or No start, worn or failing coils may prevent engine ignition, especially when cold
  • Check Engine Light (CEL) misfires often trigger fault codes. While older models won’t display modern codes, CEL illumination is still common
  • Loss of power / reduced fuel economy, Incomplete combustion leads to reduced performance and increased fuel consumption
  • Backfiring or fuel odor, unburned fuel expelled through the exhaust may ignite, resulting in audible backfires or fuel smells

About Ignition Coil

Ignition Coils – Reliable Spark and Power Delivery for Porsche Engines

Ignition coils are essential components in your Porsche’s ignition system, transforming low-voltage power from the battery into the high-voltage energy required to ignite the air-fuel mixture inside the engine cylinders. A healthy ignition coil ensures smooth acceleration, efficient combustion, and consistent engine performance.

At Design911, we supply a wide range of genuine and high-quality ignition coils for various Porsche models including 356, 911, 924, 944 and 928. Each coil is precision-engineered for durability, heat resistance, and optimal spark performance, ensuring your Porsche continues to deliver the power, efficiency, and reliability it was designed for.

What Do Ignition Coils Do?

Ignition coils play a crucial role in your Porsche’s ignition system by converting 12-volt battery power into up to 40,000 volts to fire the spark plugs. Their main functions include:

  • Generating high-voltage spark energy for combustion.
  • Delivering consistent ignition timing across all cylinders.
  • Supporting smooth acceleration and engine efficiency.
  • Reducing emissions by ensuring complete combustion.

Modern Porsche models may feature coil-on-plug systems that provide precise, individual spark control for each cylinder — maximising performance and responsiveness.

Why Do Ignition Coils Fail?

Over time, ignition coils are subjected to high voltage, heat, and vibration, which can cause wear or internal damage. Common causes of failure include:

  • Heat degradation of coil insulation or wiring.
  • Moisture intrusion leading to short circuits.
  • Age-related electrical fatigue in coil windings.
  • Faulty spark plugs causing excessive resistance and strain.
  • Corrosion or poor electrical connections.

Typical symptoms include engine misfires, rough idling, loss of power, difficulty starting, or an illuminated check engine light.

Why Replace Faulty Ignition Coils?

A failing ignition coil can cause poor fuel economy, misfires, or damage to the catalytic converter. Replacing worn or damaged coils restores proper spark strength, combustion efficiency, and overall engine performance.

Benefits of replacement include:

  • Smoother acceleration and stronger performance.
  • Reduced misfires and improved fuel economy.
  • Lower emissions and smoother idle.
  • Long-lasting, manufacturer-quality reliability.

All ignition coils in our range are made using high-grade materials and advanced insulation technology, ensuring consistent voltage delivery, heat resistance, and dependable performance under demanding conditions.

1. What does an ignition coil do in a Porsche?
The ignition coil converts the car’s 12-volt battery power into a high-voltage spark that ignites the fuel-air mixture in each cylinder. This ensures smooth engine operation, efficient combustion, and reliable performance.

2. What are the symptoms of a bad ignition coil?
Common signs of a failing ignition coil include engine misfires, rough idling, reduced acceleration, poor fuel economy, and a check engine light. You may also notice hesitation or vibration when accelerating.

3. Can I drive my Porsche with a bad ignition coil?
Driving with a failing ignition coil is not recommended. It can cause engine misfires, loss of power, and long-term damage to spark plugs or the catalytic converter. Replacement should be done promptly to avoid costly repairs.

4. How long do ignition coils last on a Porsche?
Typically, ignition coils last between 60,000 and 100,000 miles, depending on driving conditions and maintenance. Regular spark plug replacement and avoiding moisture exposure can extend their lifespan.

5. Are manufacturer-quality ignition coils as good as genuine Porsche parts?
Yes — manufacturer-quality ignition coils are built to the same precise specifications and performance standards as genuine parts. They provide excellent fitment, voltage output, and long-term reliability, often at a more cost-effective price.
