Upgrading to a billet side plate will add significant strength and increased reliability to the differential section.
Our design features include:
A ring gear thrust bolt to reduce ring gear deflection under load
Ports that can be used for an oil cooling system
Cross drilled oil passageways for the differential bearing
Comes with (3) 3/4 - 16 O ring plugs.

Porsche Gearbox Side Cover Plates | Strength, Precision & Leak-Free Transmission Sealing
Gearbox side cover plates are essential structural components that seal and protect the outer section of your Porsche’s transmission casing. These plates help maintain internal oil pressure, protect bearings and shafts, and provide access for inspection or service. A properly fitted side cover plate ensures your gearbox remains leak-free, correctly aligned, and fully protected from contaminants.
At Design911, we supply precision-engineered gearbox side cover plates and related components designed to meet or exceed original performance standards. Manufactured from high-strength aluminium or steel alloys, each plate delivers exceptional sealing integrity, rigidity, and fitment accuracy.
Whether you’re rebuilding a classic Porsche gearbox or maintaining a modern transmission, our gearbox side cover plates provide superior durability, reliable oil containment, and perfect alignment for long-term drivetrain performance.
What
Do Gearbox Side Cover Plates Do?
The gearbox side cover plate acts as a critical
closure component for the transmission housing, helping to retain oil, support
bearings, and maintain gearbox alignment.
Core Functions:
- Seals the gearbox casing to prevent oil leaks and contamination.
- Maintains internal pressure and proper oil circulation.
- Supports bearings, shafts, and selector mechanisms.
- Provides access for gearbox inspection or servicing.
- Helps maintain the gearbox’s structural integrity under load.
Without a properly fitted or sealed cover plate, oil leaks, bearing misalignment, and internal contamination can occur — leading to premature gearbox wear or failure.
Why Do Gearbox Side Cover Plates Fail or Wear Out?
Gearbox side cover plates are exposed to constant thermal expansion, pressure cycles, and vibration. Over time, this can weaken the plate or its sealing surfaces.
Common Causes of Failure Include:
- Warping or cracking due to excessive heat or pressure.
- Corrosion or pitting from moisture or road debris.
- Worn sealing surfaces causing oil leaks.
- Loose fasteners or damaged gaskets.
- Impact damage from improper handling or installation.
Once compromised, side cover plates can cause oil leaks, misalignment, and loss of gearbox efficiency — all of which can lead to costly repairs if not addressed.
Why Replace or Upgrade Your Porsche Gearbox Side Cover Plates?
Replacing a damaged or leaking gearbox side cover plate restores proper sealing and alignment, ensuring smooth transmission operation. Upgraded or reinforced designs improve rigidity and resistance to pressure fluctuations, ideal for performance or motorsport applications.
Key Benefits:
- Restores gearbox sealing and oil retention.
- Prevents leaks, contamination, and internal wear.
- Maintains correct bearing and shaft alignment.
- Improves structural rigidity and heat management.
- Suitable for manual, automatic, and PDK Porsche gearboxes.
- Ideal for rebuilds, restorations, and performance upgrades.
During gearbox rebuilds, replacing the side cover plate — along with seals and gaskets — ensures long-term reliability and consistent performance.
