What It Is & What It Does
The sump plug seal is a crush washer or
sealing ring designed to fit between the drain plug and sump on your
Porsche’s engine or transmission. When the plug is tightened, the seal
compresses to create a tight, fluid-proof barrier, preventing oil
seepage while allowing for future removal during servicing.
Constructed from high-quality aluminium or copper, this sealing washer ensures consistent pressure distribution and lasting durability under high temperatures and vibration.
Why It Fails - Over time, the sump plug seal can deteriorate due to:
- Thermal
expansion and contraction during repeated heat cycles
- Deformation from over-tightening the drain plug
Reusing old or damaged seals often results in oil leaks, drips from the drain plug, or even stripped threads on the sump if overtightened.
Why It Should Be
Replaced - Porsche recommends replacing the sump plug seal every
time an oil change is performed. A new seal ensures:
- Leak-free
sealing and correct torque
- Prevention of oil loss or contamination
- Extended life of the sump and plug threads
