Product Information
Product Information

The OE Match Camshaft Position Sensor plays a vital role in monitoring the precise timing and position of each camshaft. This information is sent to the engine control module (ECM), which also relies on signals from sensors such as the crankshaft position sensor and knock sensors. Using these inputs, the ECM adjusts ignition timing and fuel injection—advancing or retarding timing based on driving conditions like heavy load or changes in air pressure.

When a camshaft position sensor begins to fail, it can trigger a check engine light and, in severe cases, may force the vehicle into limp mode to protect the engine.

Engine Camshaft Position Sensor Function

The camshaft position sensor—often called the CMP sensor—provides real-time camshaft position data to the ECU. This feedback is essential for optimizing ignition timing and ensuring smooth, efficient engine operation. A faulty sensor can lead to significant drivability issues such as hesitation, stumbling, loss of power, or even hard-starting and no-start situations.

Symptoms of a Failing Camshaft Position Sensor

• Check Engine Light (CEL)

A malfunctioning sensor often triggers diagnostic trouble codes related to camshaft timing.

• Extended Crank or No-Start

Without accurate timing feedback, the engine may struggle to start or fail to start entirely.

• Poor Drivability

Hesitation, stumbling on acceleration, and reduced engine power are common signs of a failing CMP sensor.
